Preserving Fertility through Egg Freezing, not experimental anymore

The American Society of Reproductive Medicine announced recently that fertility preservation through oocyte vitrification (egg freezing) is no longer experimental.

At the Reproductive Health Center, we can preserve oocytes (human eggs) for use in the future. For young women who would like to delay childbearing, this is a game changer. Going to law school, medical school or graduate school? Joining the Peace Corps? Are you not planning on starting a family until you are in your 30’s or even 40’s? Preserving your oocytes through vitrification (a process that super cools the eggs making them like glass) and storing them may give you a good chance of having biological children in the future. The general rule of thumb is for every 6 eggs, plan on having one (and possibly two) blastocysts (embryos that develop to the 5th day).

So, if you have big plans for the future, you may want to discuss fertility preservation through oocyte vitrification at the Reproductive Health Center. The cost for retrieving your eggs is about $4200.  Medication costs (fertility medications) will vary depending on the individual, but are generally about $2000 and storage of the oocytes is $250 per year.
